Koenig Collection

Wilhelm Ludwig (Bill) Koenig, born 18th March 1891 in Horsham, he completed his senior education at Geelong College and later farmed a property situated on the Barwon Park Road near the northern boundary of the Shire of Winchelsea. His services as a Winchelsea Shire Councillor extended from 1926-1945 and his interest in history, especially regarding Aboriginals, continued throughout his life. On retirement from the Council, he and his wife (who had been a school teacher at Winchelsea and was the former Anne Cook) moved to Geelong. He died there in December 1952. Anne Koenig then moved to Melbourne and died on 2nd March 1985.

Over the many years Bill Koenig researched the aboriginal culture and language he collected many artefacts. These predominately were from the land of both the Guligad and Wathaurong tribes. After his death the artefacts, and later his research documents were donated to the Winchelsea Historical Society.

In 2014 Belinda Ensor and Meredith Blake from Museums Australia (Vic) examined the collection with President, Ken Daniels.

The collection was displayed in 2017 as part of NAIDOC week.
